How We Got Here
Patrick and Kelly Murphy had always had a place for animals in their hearts. After moving back to Barstow about 6 years ago, their American Bulldog, Zero, died of a brain tumor. To avoid going through the same pain again, they decided not to get another dog after that. However, a friend brought them a rescue dog a few months later. Shortly after, they instantly fell in love with another dog that wandered into their yard. After that, they kept finding dogs that were lost. They realized that they lived in a place where a lot of dogs need homes. The couple began picking up homeless dogs and fostering, providing temporary homes, for the Barstow Humane Society. Fostering, caring for and finding good homes for abandoned animals has been both fulfilling and rewarding for Patrick and Kelly.

Becoming a Non-Profit Organization
Patrick and Kelly quickly realized that many rescue and foster animals were in their area, but they had yet to establish a shelter. Patrick and Kelly worked on forming a tax-exempt 501c3 non-profit and establishing a shelter in their community, and with that, Route 66 Animal Shelter was born.
